Build the essential knowledge to understand moving and handling risks and support safer, person-centred practice.

This eLearning module helps learners understand the principles behind safer moving and handling. It explores how to recognise and reduce risks, why safe handling principles matter and how to support people in a person-centred way. It’s designed to complement practical training and assessment of competence.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore:

  • responsibilities for moving and handling safely
  • how the body responds to movement and load
  • factors that can increase the risk of injury
  • how to identify and reduce risks using the Task, Individual, Load and Environment (TILE) approach
  • safer handling principles, including planning, positioning and appropriate equipment
  • the importance of communication, coordination and teamwork
  • how to take a person-centred approach when supporting people
  • how consent, choice, dignity and independence should inform moving and handling support.

The module combines practical guidance with interactive activities and scenarios set in care homes and home care. These help learners connect moving and handling principles with situations they may encounter at work and consider both the physical demands of assisting someone and the experience of the person receiving support. A knowledge check is also included.

The course supports relevant moving and handling responsibilities within adult social care, including CQC requirements around person-centred care, dignity and respect, consent, and safe care and treatment. It also covers key principles from relevant workplace health and safety legislation and HSE guidance.

Who is it for?

All adult social care staff and anyone involved in moving and handling objects or supporting people. No prior knowledge or experience is required. The module covers the theory and underpinning knowledge and should be used alongside practical moving and handling training and assessment of competence appropriate to the learner’s role and workplace.
